SATURDAY MORNING FEELING
Before I show up to any in-home photo session, I like to do a video call with my clients first. Just to connect, talk through ideas, get a feel for who they are. And one of the questions I always ask is: what does a typical Saturday morning look like for your family?
Lizzie and her husband didn't hesitate. Pancakes. On the griddle. In the backyard. In their PJs.
And I was like, okay, that's what we should build your session around.
It sounds so simple, right? And that's exactly the point. Nobody thinks to hire a photographer for pancake Saturday. Nobody thinks, this is the thing I need documented. But here's what I know after doing this long enough: those slow, ordinary mornings are the ones you're going to miss the most. Helping your son pour the milk, everyone in PJs, the griddle sizzling outside, a brand new baby just existing in the middle of all of it, that's the stuff.
When you're living inside it, you forget to see all the beauty. You can't zoom out, but I can. I can catch the moments that parents of young children often miss.
I just followed them around and photographed their life. After they ate the pancakes, we did some family shots in the master bedroom, all piled on the bed, playing, just being together in the unhurried way that new families have before the world gets loud again.
What we all didn't know at the time, and what makes this session feel even more precious now, is that they ended up moving out of that house just a few months later. This was their first home. The house they brought their babies home to. And we got it. All of it. On a random Saturday morning with pancakes and PJs in the morning glowy light.
I left that session feeling like I had done something that actually mattered. Not just made pretty pictures, but actually captured something that appreciates more and more over time.
That's why I love what I do.
