RIGHT ON TIME

You might remember Mallory from her maternity session at South Side Studio. Well, she had her baby. A little early, actually. And when they were ready we made something really beautiful.

Here's something I tell pretty much every new mom I work with: wait on the newborn session. I know, I know, typically you wait 2-3 weeks after you give birth. But I genuinely prefer shooting around the two month mark. By then, mama is more herself again. The baby has filled out, found their smile, and your everyone has finally found their groove. By then, there's just more personality there to work with, and the whole thing feels less like surviving and more like living.

And living is exactly what we documented.

Mallory and her husband are DIYers. They've been renovating their home for a couple of years, and it is gorgeous. Most of it was done, but there are still a few corners that are mid process, mid vision, mid becoming. Instead of hiding that, they wanted to lean into it. They wanted to document exactly how looked, stacks of paint cans and all.

I love this little family so much. And secretly, this was one of my favorite in home sessions I've ever done. Not just because of the people in it, though that's a big part of it. It's what the whole session represents for me. Our lives are never finished. Never fully polished. We are all mid progress, mid renovation, mid DIYing our way through life. And to be able to just sit in that and say this is worth documenting, is what’s so beautiful to me.
